This exhibition tells about the interrelation of the Brazilian society's
formation and the expansion movements held in defense of the territory,
showing arms, military uniforms, flags, indian artifacts, archeological
pieces, landmarks, and objects belonging to the Imperial Family and
Presidents of the Republic.
The outstanding and.monumental. painting "The Naval Combat of Riachuelo",
by Vitor Meireles (1832-1903) reproduces an important episode of the war
with Paraguai, in 1865.

In permanent exhibition since 1993, this magnificent painting "The Naval
Combat of Riachuelo" was entirely restored by the group of technicians of
