Since the foundation of the city of Saint Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro, in
1565, the point that advanced towards the sea, between the Piaçaba and
Santa Luzia beaches, later called Calaboose, was considered strategic for
the city's defense.
In 1567, Mem de Sa initiated the construction of the Santiago Battery,
increased in 1603 to become the Santiago Fort, an important unit of the
protection system of the city.
In 1693, the place became known as Calaboose, with the Fort also used as a
prison for slaves.
