ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY - CASA DO TREM

SANTIAGO FORT CASA DO TREM EXPOSITION 1922 THE MUSEUM BACK

The "Casa do Trem" (Ammunition Depot) was built in 1762, next to the Santiago Fort, for the guard of armaments and equipments for troops sent from Portugal, to reinforce the defense of the city, threatened by corsaires that came in search of gold in the state of Minas Gerais.
When raised to the condition of capital of the State of Brazil, in 1764 Count Bobadela built the War Arsenal, used for the fabrication of munitions and and repairing of arms.
The arrival of the Royal Family, in 1808, the Independece, in 1822 and the establishment of the Empire, transformed the complex "Casa do Trem" and War Arsenal into a great center for the production and the guard of armaments for the Brazilian Army.
