In partnership with the Social Service of Commerce/SESC, the National
Museum of History produced the itinerant exhibition "The Republic in the
trace of Rian", with photographic reproductions and caricatures of
politicians and notables of the republican period, from 1890 to 1964, made
by Nair de Teffé, said Rian (1886-1981), wife of the President of the
Republic Hermes da Fonseca.
26 original caricatures belonging to the collection of the Museum's
Archives, among which those of Presidents Juscelino Kubitschek, Eurico
Gaspar Dutra, João Café Filho and Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco.
The ironical drawings of Rian focused mainly political personalities and
figues of the high society. In 1913, already well known as a caricaturist,
she marries the then President Hermes da Fonseca, scandalizing often, with
her excentric attitudes, the routine of the Catete Palace. Nair de Teffé
had her works published in national and foreign magazines, as the Semanário
Fon-Fon, Gazeta de Notícias, Le Rire, Fantasio and others.
The itinerant exhibition is composed of 26 50x60cm panels, and other
details can be obtained by calling (5521) 550-9259.
