NUMISMATIC COLLECTION
The numismatic collection of the National Historical Museum is the largest in its kind in Latin America and one of the world's most important one. Over 127 thousand items, distributed by subjects: coins, paper money, medals, condecorations, philately and sigillography. Telephone: 0 55 21- 550-9228.
Decadrama - Silver. Circa 467-465 AC, Athenas

From ancient coins, as the greek dracmas and roman denarios to modern bank and telephone magnetic cards, the collection is classified according to geographical and chronological criteria, commonly adopted in numismatic, and allows researches to establish a complete panorama of men's course in pursuit of the establishment of regular values, for daily relationship.

How to pay, for example, dutch troops that blockade Recife in 1646? The "obsidionals" coins, considered by many the first brazilian money, coined under siege in the name of the Privileged Company of Western India, was the solution. Alike as the "necessity coins" minted in porcelain by the germans to substitute, for a short period, their normal currency after First World War, known as "notgeld".

Índio - Silver. D. Manuel (1495-1521)

Quite complete the portuguese and brazilian collections are significant and include unique coins in the world, such as the "Indio" - a silver coin minted in 1499, in the reign of D. Manuel I during preparations for the Second Armada to India - , the half long cross tornês of D. Fernando ( 1367 - 1383 ), the real of D. Sebastiao I dated 1562, and rare examples: the "Coronation Piece", minted in 1822 ( only 64 ) by Emperor D. Pedro I to be offered during his coronation . No more coins of the coronation day were minted, for the Emperor did not approve of his naked bust and laureated head; important, roman and ancient greek coins, that together amount to 7.600 pieces, among which, a silver half estater of King Creso, of Lidia ( 566-548 b.c. ) the oldest coin of the set.

Golden bars and their certificates, the first tickets of the Real Extração Co. of diamonds, the first bills emitted by the Banco do Brasil, credit notes - from those of the late Viação Excelsior, Leopoldina Railway and Jardim Botânico Railroad, to private ones, such as "worth a sea bath" from Casa Motta, and the "service voucher", from the Textile Cotton Factory of Brumado, up to the modern "lunch vouchers" - , bonds, shares and bonuses tells us something about our economic history.


Imperial Order of the Rose
The medals and honorary ranks, national and foreign ones, amount to 17 thousand pieces, among which the medal that celebrates D. João VI's acclamation; the medal in honour of Pasteur, signed by Lalique and the commemorative plate for the discovery of porcelain in Portugal, made in "biscuit" dated from 1775. Also important insignias, as the "Imperial Order of the Rose" created to perpetuate the memory of D. Pedro I's second marriage with D. Amélia de Leuchtenberg and the "Order of D. Pedro I, Founder of The Empire", integrate the collection.


Stamp used before philately. 19 century.

The philatelical collection includes stamps, postcards and first day circulating envelopes, besides circa 1.200 post marked letters, also known as pre-philatelic that, due to its rareness, constitute the highlight of the collection. The sigillographic collection includes signets, stamps, bullae, molds and stamps with rare examples, such as the stamps of the free city of Hamburg ( in wax, 12th / 13th centuries ) and two papal bulae: Clement VI ( France, 14th century ) and Julius II ( Italy, 15th / 16th centuries ).

The specialized library of the Numismatic Study Center is available to researches and the public. Constant donations maintain the collection updated, and, to meet with modern times, new categories are being open, such as credit and telephone magnetic cards.
